Concepts to understand:
Ki – Energy / Ri – Energize / Romi – Agitate / Ha – Breath / Haka – cathartic use of (self) energy to stimulate and heighten the self.

For people, the digestive tract, extracts the energy from the food. The lungs get it from the air. When these 2 unite in the toto / bloodstream they form a mauri (life force) or energy, that circulates within and without the body.

Much of my work is done on the ground or the floor.  This is the traditional way that our body work was done.   I remember Aunty Bella Nathan and how people would come from miles around to see her, for every ailment they had on the body external or internal.  She was a master at the work she did, and when I was young she taught me how to walk on the back of one of my Uncle’s.  In fact this was a usual thing in most Maori households years ago.  I’m not so sure it’s as practiced as it used to be.  

During the summer  Aunty Bella would work outside on the ground.  There were no airs or graces, when you came, you just lay down and away she went.  I remember her as being a well built woman like myself, and yet so nimble on her feet.  She could contort her foot around an ankle or a bone like none other I seen then and now.  One of her constant reminders was to have ‘soft’ yet ‘strong’ feet.

Over time I have heard many therapists talk and treat the back like it is a very fragile thing.  Then when they see myself, Manu, Terence, Papa, working the back using our feet with our full weight, there is concern and in some cases panic.   The back is much stronger than we give it credit for.  We negotiate it (the back) with care and knowing. 

What we know and understand is that if you sit a lot and do not participate in regular exercise, then the body’s ability to handle deep work of any nature is lessened.  It’s amazing really how much pressure the back can take.  While this is definitely a good tactic, treat the back like it is a treasure, be sure when working it, and allow yourself and your client time to adjust after each move. Ensure you know where to place your feet.  Do so with caution for those you are working on.  Be sure in your movements and pressure.

And enjoy the work.  

Terence is supporting me to do a resource CD on footwork.  I’m not sure what it will look like, but at least we’re looking to doing something as the requests are many these days.
